Suspicious Vehicle

This is a message from Harborough & Lutterworth Police in conjunction with the Harborough District Neighbourhood Watch Association.

At around 11am on Thursday 4th September, a white Transit Van with a registration number similar to M434 VKY was seen acting suspiciously in the areas of Great Glen, Burton Overy, King's Norton and Gaulby.

Criminals will often carry out reconnaissance of a potential target before they attempt to steal things. In recent weeks we have seen a slight increase in the number of metal thefts and thefts of horse tack and other valuables from rural premises including farms, stable yards and rural dwellings. It is believed that this vehicle may have been trying to locate valuable items for a visit at a later date. More »

Harborough Police would ask everyone to be vigilant and to report any sightings of this or any other suspicious vehicle to the police immediately on 0116 222 2222. Let the call handling staff know that you are responding to a request for observations.

Please pass this message onto as many people as possible. Your assistance is appreciated. « Less

Campaign targets speeding motorists

Roads identified by members of the community as hotspots for speeding
motorists will be targeted by police as part of a week long crackdown.

Leicestershire Constabulary is taking part in a European-wide Speed
Enforcement Campaign from Monday August 18 to Sunday August 24.

Throughout the week officers will be focusing their efforts on speeding motorists and issuing £60 fines and three points to motorists caught exceeding the limit. In some areas mobile electronic screens will also be used to display the speed of oncoming vehicles to raise awareness
among motorists. More »

Graham Compton from Leicestershire Constabulary's Traffic Management
Department said: "Speeding is clearly a concern for members of our
communities. Regular consultations held with communities by
neighbourhood officers across the county highlight speeding as a concern
for many residents. These concerns have led, in many cases, to speeding
being identified as a policing priority for that area.

"During this week of enforcement, officers will be paying special
attention to such hotspot locations as well as stepping up enforcement operations across the city and county."

Inspector Viv Brenchley, commander of Leicestershire Constabulary's Road
Policing Unit, said: "Speed is one of the largest contributory factors
in all fatal and serious injury collisions. The greater the speed upon
impact in a crash - the more severe the injuries will be.

"The impact on a family when a loved one is killed on the road is
devastating. We see this on a regular basis and it is one of the most
unpleasant experiences we have to deal with.

"If we can get motorists to slow down then it will reduce the number of
collisions and thereby make the roads of Leicester, Leicestershire and
Rutland safer for everybody."

The speeding enforcement campaign is being co-ordinated by TISPOL, the
European Traffic Police Network. It aims to reduce road deaths and
casualties on European roads by bringing together the roads and traffic
police forces in Europe to work together and exchange best practice.

Watch out ......There's a thief about!

A resident got home from holiday & was unpacking his car, taking one case into his house on a Sunday evening at9 p.m. There was no-one in the street at that time. By the time he went outside again to fetch other items, someone had stolen his Sat Nav, his expensive aviation specs, and his wallet from the glove box and on looking around the street still seemed to be deserted.

This seems to be yet another style of opportunist theft - of which there are so many. We are concerned that there will be more of this type of theft with the economy moving down, so we are urging everyone to be extra vigilant and to report any suspicious cars or persons to the Police immediately on 0116 222 222.
