DO YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING STORY TO TELL?
DO YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING STORY TO TELL?

We are looking for women who would like to be interviewed as part of the Alice Hawkins Heritage Project. Based on the inspirational story of Leicester’s suffragette Alice Hawkins, the project aims to celebrate and cherish women’s right to vote, right to freedom, right to equal opportunities and to quality of life.

100 years on from Alice Hawkins’ courageous fight for women’s rights, the LeicestHERday Trust are looking to recruit approximately 150 women to discover and document the experiences, achievements, challenge and triumphs of women in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland over the last century. Do you have an interesting heritage you would like to share with our young people? Have you or anyone in your family had to overcome barriers or obstacles in life? Have you had to fight to achieve equality? Could other people be inspired by your struggles?

Your story could be made into a lasting record for generations to come!

We are looking for people from all walks of life to share their stories with a young volunteer. The stories collected will enable young people to make connections with their own circumstances and help them to understand the importance of life events and decisions, inspiring and motivating them to understand the rights of citizens of all gender and cultural origin, linking our heritage with the future.

The completed archive – including Alice’s story - will be showcased by the county and city record offices and at the Leicester Mercury and BBC. The stories collected will be recorded in a variety of mediums including dance, drama, radio, video, artwork and oral history. If you would like to share your story but wish to remain anonymous, that’s fine too.

Whatever your story, we would love to hear from you. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Lara Thomas on 0116 2575615 or email lara@leicestherday.org.uk

Making Changes...

More and more people are making use of their Community Forum to try and improve local services and raise issues of local concern.
- Residents in Birstall were unhappy that the swimming pool in Longslade Community College was no longer going to be open to the public outside school hours. Discussion at the local Area Forum meeting resulted in the College working directly with local users to find ways the pool can remain open.
- Following the Government’s shortlisting of ‘Pennbury’ as a potential Eco-town, the ‘Have your Say’ meetings in Kibworth and Tugby were the first opportunity for residents in the surrounding area to find out how the District and County Council were planning to respond to this challenge.
- At the Blaby South Community Forum residents and Parish Councillors from Sapcote, Sharnford, Stoney Stanton and surrounding villages expressed their concerns about the volume and speed of Heavy Goods Vehicles travelling through their villages. In response officers promised to look into a range of measures to reduce the impact of traffic and improve road safety in the short term, while explaining how they were looking to provide longer-term solutions. Sainsbury's Make the Difference Day

Re-use your bags and be rewarded at Sainsbury’s Belgrave Road

From Saturday 14th June, Sainsbury’s Belgrave Road will begin rewarding customers who re-use their bags at the checkouts, by giving them one Nectar point for every bag they re-use.

Sainsbury’s recently announced its plans to reduce the number of free plastic bags they give away by 50% by April 2009. To achieve this target Sainsbury’s Belgrave Road is working together with its customers to reduce, re-use and recycle plastic bags, making a positive difference to the environment. More »

The ‘Make the Difference’ day on Saturday 14th June builds on Sainsbury’s Belgrave Road previous ‘Bag for Life’ days, where it gave away over 15 million Bags for Life, and its recent ‘Take an old bag shopping’ day, where the store reminded customers to re-use their bags. Now Sainsbury’s Belgrave Road is going to build on the success of both these activities and go one step further by rewarding customers for re-using their bags.

Tony Howe, store manager, says: “I think it’s fantastic that we are rewarding customers for re-using bags and this will really help us to meet our 50% plastic bag reduction target.”

‘Make the difference’ days are a series of days, one each month, aimed at encouraging positive action and change across a range of environmental, health and ethical issues. « Less
