Farms

Main Street

Main Street, Bagworth, showing the entrance to the Square (centre) and Wood Farm (right).

Mrs Frearson: Used to be eight farms in Bagworth, now there’s only one. One was Hill’s farm.

Interviewer: Where was that?

Mrs Frearson: Down a little lane off the main road. It stood in a field that did. Then there was Dilke’s farm which was called Wood’s Farm. Then there was Farmers’ farm, that was on Main Street. Then down Station Road there was Baines’ farm, on the corner. Then there was Sperry’s farm, and Miles’ Farm, George Murphy’s farm, and there was Sammy Percival’s farm, that was on Station Road, and there was two public houses up the top of Bagworth.

Interviewer: What were the pubs called?

Mrs Frearson: The Plough Inn was in the Square and the Barrel Inn was in Main Street at the top of the Square. The post office was in Main Street at one time and it was also in Station Road at one time, and down in the Square we had the post office, the general store, and the butcher’s shop, and it was all in one family, the Miles family, and..

Interviewer: And what were they like, the family?

Mrs Frearson: Oh they were a nice family, yes. Mr.. Roger Miles, he keeps the farm going now, down on Station Road, that’s the only one going.
