Bricks![]() The view from Barkby Thorpe looking towards Barkby.
Mr Bentley: Do you know why you moved to Barkby? Why the family moved to Barkby? Mrs Baines: To go to this here little brick yard, to run little brickyard, me dad used to go and make bricks you know, by hand. Mr Bentley: Where was that? Mrs Baines: On Barkby Thorpe Lane, there was a little brickyard there, and me dad used to run it. And me oldest brother used to run the bricks off, and me dad used to set the kilns and burn them and that. And then it got as the machines come out, and so of course my dad had to, got chucked out. He went to live at Humberstone then, to get the clay there. Course in the wintertime there was nothing. They used to go about with the threshing machines and that, different places. You know, my dad was always ready to work. ©EMOHA with permission of Barkby Local History Group Last Updated Fri, 13 Jan, 2006. |
