  • Guide to recording memories

This is a guide to recording oral history interviews developed by the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA)

The following links will take you to sound clips from an interview between Mr Owen Bentley and Mrs Jennifer Baines (her great grandson informs us that her name was actually Jane and she was referred to as "Jinny"). The interview was conducted in the 1970s and is about Mrs Baines' childhood in Barkby during the 1880s.

According to Barker's Directory, in 1875 Barkby parish had a population of 440 with 107 inhabited houses. Many of the inhabitants were farmers. Thomas Sewards ran the Malt Shovel Inn.

  • Bricks

Mrs Baines' father worked at a local brick yard.

  • Childhood

    The children slept on sacks.

  • Cooking

    Using the local bakehouse.

  • Pub

Father would sometimes work at the local pub, the Malt Shovel.

  • School and Games

Sometimes not being able to afford to go to school, and playing with battledores and shuttlecocks on pancake day.

  • Toffee and Wine

    Buying toffee and making wine.

The full interview these clips were taken from is available to listen to at the Records Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland. Quote the reference numbers under the sound clips.
