Barrow News Published in Loughborough EchoOPEN GARDENSOn Thursday evening last week, Rosemary Adams from Rainbows was presented with a cheque for the fantastic sum of £2802.74. This amount was raised the previous weekend by Open Gardens in Barrow upon Soar. After the first hour on the Saturday when it poured with rain, the weather was beautiful and at least 600 people from all over the county came to the village over the two afternoons visiting 24 gardens. As this event was such a success and everyone enjoyed themselves so much, it was agreed that Open Gardens will take place next year on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2009. HERITAGE GROUP DISPLAY.There is another opportunity to see the exhibition on Barrow-upon-Soar streets. Barrow library have kindly agreed to display the photos and information until next Monday, the library has good disabled access. The exhibition will display some of the work that Barrow Heritage Group has been doing within their Heritage Lottery Grant projects. The Streets Group will share their findings about the history of several of Barrow’s older streets including Beveridge Street, Church Street and North Street. They have looked at the fascinating history of some of the old houses and their occupants and delved into stories that have become part of the folk law of the village. They will also share their findings on the origin of some 30 of Barrow’s street names. STRAWBERRY TEA FOR CHARITY.Mrs Fran Foulger is hosting a Breast Cancer Care strawberry tea charity day, at her home, 9, Avon Road, Barrow-upon-Soar on Friday June 27th from 10am until 4pm. There will be a bring and buy stall and cakes for sale. WELCOME EVENINGFor new and newish residents of Barrow upon Soar. Monday 30 June at the Community Centre, Cotes Road. Free wine, juice, tea and nibbles. Bar opens at 7.00 for 7.30pm. Come and meet lots of village organisations and find out what goes on in Barrow. Everyone welcome. PARISH WALK.The next parish walk is to take place on Thursday 3 July. Meet the leader Bob Mudge at the Three Crowns car park for a 7pm prompt start. This walk is approximately 4-4½ miles and goes out via I.27 to Millers Bridge, returning via K.31 to Fleshovel Lane and K.29 to the road or via the old three corner spinney to the Soar Bridge Inn. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead at all times. Suitable clothing and footwear should be worn. TABLE TOP SALEHeather Burton will be holding a table top sale, tea, coffee and a raffle on Saturday 5 July at the Church Rooms from 9.30 – 11.15am. All proceeds are going to Declans Miracle. Declan is an 8 year old boy who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which is a terminal muscle wasting disease. The money raised will go to help make his short life a full and enjoyable one. HOG ROAST AND DISCO.Barrow upon Soar Scout group is having a hog roast and 60’s and 70’s disco on Saturday 5 July between 7 – 11.30pm. This is to be held at the Scout Group HQ on Grove Lane. ARCHAEOLOGY DISPLAYBarrow Archaeology Group will present an exhibition to display over 40 archaeological finds from Barrow that help to build a picture of man’s existence in and around the village over the last 800,000 years. The exhibition is on Saturday July 5 from 10.30am – 3.00pm in the Parish Office, High Street, Barrow and is free. A new free booklet, “The Archaeology of Barrow” will also be available, hot off the press. TREASURE HUNT.On Friday 11 July, there is a Village Treasure Hunt starting at 6.30pm from the Barrow Conservative club and finishing back there for refreshments and prizes. Follow the clues and enjoy a funfilled summer evening scouring the streets and snickets of Barrow-upon-Soar on foot. The cost is £5 per team, with a maximum of 6 people (4 adults) per team. BARROW TOWN JUNIOR F.C.The current under 11s football team are looking to recruit new players for the forthcoming season at under 12’s. The team has been together since under 7’s but are looking to strengthen the current squad at 11 a-side for season 2008-09. Games are generally on Sundays and training on Tuesday nights. The age requirement is aged 11 by the 31st August 2008.
