For 580years, the tenor bell of St.John the Baptist called the `villages to prayer.'

It was a custom to toll the tenor bell for the start of preaching.

The tenor bell was cast by John of York in 1380 and is 11cwt.
The bell used to be chipped to get the desired note as the chisel marks show.
Now it is done by an electric drill.

The oldest bell in the tower is dated 1624 and another 1628.

John of York's bell has never been recast.

THE PARISH CHURCH has a 13th century north arcade.
The tower was begun at the same time.
Was rebuilt in 1862.
Three years later the south aisle was built with an arcade.

THE CHALICE is dated 1575.

The oldest register begins in 1579.
