Cats' Tales - 3

by Barbara Sheppard

In a country cottage a big black cat was fast asleep curled up in an armchair in front of a glowing fire, his body gently moving up and down as he snored away.

Behind a tall cupboard two little mice suddenly popped out and decided to look around for food. They could smell cheese and newly baked bread which was on the kitchen table. The mice quickly ran up the table leg and managed to climb on to a tea towel which was hanging over the edge of the table. They found their way to the huge chunk of cheese and started nibbling away enjoying the tasty feast. Then they ran over to the crusty bread and were quickly eating all the breadcrumbs scattered on the breadboard.

But - as they ran this way and that, they dislodged the cheese knife and sent it hurtling down to the kitchen tiles. There it landed with an ear-shattering clatter!

With all this activity going on, it woke up the cat who opened one eye and saw the mice dashing around the table looking for more food.

But the cat was still rather tired after being so rudely woken up and when he saw the cheeky mice he thought to himself that he really couldn't be bothered to give chase at that moment, so .......

.... the cat got up and slowly walked away.

THE END
