We exist to give advice and raise money for conservation. Monthly meetings are held at Blaby Social Centre, usually the first Thursday of the month with a variety of guest speakers and tortoise topics. See below for details.

At our April and September meetings we hold post and pre hibernation health checks on your tortoises These are open evenings at which anyone can bring their tortoise for a health check for a nominal fee.

Last year we raised money for Topanga, the tortoise centre in Cornwall which suffered the theft of several tortoises. We also made a donation to Ryan Walker who has been in Madagascar researching the Madagascan Spider Tortoise (Pyxis Arachnoides). In addition we make donations to our parent organisation, The British Chelonia Group for their chosen charity of the year.

  • The Tortoise Garden

We helped The Tortoise Garden in 2009 following the thefts of tortoises from their site. In 2010 we again helped them because they are having a fight with officialdom. The Council have reclassified the place as a Zoo and the Tortoises as wild animals! The result is that she has to meet Zoo legislation. See our Autumn newsletter for details.

Illegal Activity in The Pet Trade

We have contacts with the Police Wildlife Crime Officer. If you have knowledge of any person or pet shop trying to sell a CITES listed Tortoise without a licence please let me know and I will pass the details onto the Police.

Equally if you are aware of any other illegal activity let me know. The police officer has asked that requests are made via the Group so that we can provide him with any technical help required such as identifying species.
