The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Bottesford

The Church

The church stands proud in the surrounding graveyard

The church was built by and has always been the family church of the inhabitants of belvoir Castle, who were buried in the church until 1828 - hence the monuments.
It is one of the largest village churches in England and contains a remarkable collection of tombs (see picture gallery)of the Lords of belvoir: eight Earls, including six Knights of the Garter. One tomb is the only one in the country to record the death of two heirs to an earldom by witchcraft. The witches were executed or died in 1618.
The spire, at 210 feet, is one of the tallest in the country.
The pulpit is Jacobean.
The brass(see picture gallery) commemorating Henry de Codyntoun, a Rector of Bottesford, who died in 1404.
