Burton Overy Independent Chapel

The Independent Chapel, Burton Overy

The Independent Chapel, Burton Overy

The first mention of the Burton Overy Independent Chapel is in the [Little] Stretton Chapel Book 1840 - 1885 where it states "In 1880 the surplus from the rents was paid to Burton Overy Independent Chapel ‘for ministers’. And this carried on until the end of the book in 1885"].
Built in 1855, in the Main Street, the Independent Chapel later became the Congregational Chapel which then became the modern United Reformed Church although this particular chapel was closed way earlier than that, in the 1970s. At the time of recording the monuments, (1983) the church was already closed, the last burial recorded on the gravestone was in 1973.
In recent times, the church has been converted into a dwelling house. Some gravestones still remain in the grounds.
A fuller history can be found elsewhere on this site, in the book by Joan Stephens "Aspects of Burton Overy" and can be viewed in it's entirety listed on the page History of Burton Overy
