The Big Switch Off is a partnership of local authorities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland promoting energy efficiency campaign running for a week from 12th – 18th October 2009. The innovative week-long campaign encourages everyone in three authority areas to switch off unnecessary electrical equipment and lighting to save energy, money and cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. To find out more on the campaign, please visit www.leics.gov.uk/bigswitchoff More » Over £1.8 billion worth of energy is wasted by leaving appliances on standby at work and home in the UK. The Big Switch Off campaign aims to address this and encourage local organisations and households to reduce their energy use and costs. The residents in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland could potentially save over £13million by switching off appliances on standby! To do their bit residents, schools, colleges and universities, community and faith groups are invited to get involved in various competitions. There are competitions to save energy, design a short-film, design a certificates with some tempting prizes for everyone – for further information please visit www.leics.gov.uk/bsocompetitions To make a difference at your home, school or work, the Big Switch Off partnership will provide free resources from the website. During the Big Switch Off week, we will release daily energy saving tips on different themes. The service, provided by the Leicestershire Library Service, is absolutely free and provides access to a huge range of books, including books in large print and talking books. Music CDs are also available and a DVD subscription service for a small charge. Signing up for the service couldn’t be easier. We will visit you to discuss your choice of books or music, and a volunteer will then visit regularly to deliver the items to your home. Alternatively, arrangements can be made so that a friend or relative can collect books and other items on your behalf.
