An open meeting was held in Castle Donington on Tuesday July 3rd 2007 at 7.30pm in St. Edward’s Church Hall when the speaker was Mr David Boyson, Principal Planning Officer (Conservation) at North West Leicestershire District Council.

Castle Donington was chosen as Leicestershire’s very first Conservation Area because of the amount of noteworthy buildings and its interesting street pattern but in recent years the area has become less defined.

The meeting was arranged by the Environmental Steering Group and Mick Shaw, a spokesman for the group said he was pleased with the large turnout. “The appearance of Castle Donington should be a source of pride for all” he said.

The Castle Donington Environmental Steering Group has a current and very active agenda:

So what has the CD ESG been doing since its inception in August 2002?
We'd like to tell you:
We looked at all the things that the people of Castle Donington wanted in their village in the Village Appraisal published in 2001.
Things like:
The roundabouts at the village entrances should be planted with flowers and shrubs, and not just be boring grass.

Airport roundabout

Isn't this pretty? N.E.M.A and other local companies have contributed generously to planting these once barren roundabouts at the entrances to our village!

Willow Farm Roundabout
DHL roundabout

Even race-goers can calmly appreciate the scenery..

The village signs were also those plain standard issue "town signs". CD needed something more "villagey"

Entrance sign by the Airport

The entrances to the village were drab in spring.........so why couldn't there be a spray of colour.......

Daffodils planted in November 2003

The Parish Council has successfully refurbished Long Well - a welcome stop for travellers back to the racetrack from watering holes in the village!
It used to be used for the horses to have a drink on the climb up Bondgate and the High Street, you know.......

There's loads more to do - Borough Street has been refurbished, and more is to be done.

We're looking at a Village Sign at Pinfold Gardens, and giving the Parish Church's graveyard a tidy to restore stones that are being gradually lost under grass.

We want to make sure the new Power Station Distribution Centre will look smart, and promote corporate sponsorship of key visual areas in Donington.

But if you have any ideas to beautify Donington, please let us know. You can reach us through the Village Appraisal contacts - see Local Groups.
