Croxton Kerrial Charities

The Edward Hallam Charity

Edward Hallam, born locally, died in 1683 leaving £100 to the citizens of Croxton Kerrial. This money was invested in land at Muston in the Vale of Belvoir. Of the income from this land, 1/6 goes to "ye children catechised", i.e. to the school, and for Bibles presented to children moving on to secondary education when they leave the school. These Bibles are presented during a special Ascension Day service each year.
Of the remaining income, 1/6 goes to the minister and the remainder to the widows and poor of the parish. This is distributed annually in December.
A plaque referring to the Edward Hallam Charity is on the south-west pillar in Croxton Kerrial Church.

The William Chester Charity

William Chester died in 1703, leaving land in Barkeston le Vale for the benefit of the poor in the parishes of Barkestone, Knipton, Croxton Kerrial, Buckminster, Burton-on-the-Wolds and Harby, all in the county of Leicestershire. The income from this land was to provide, yearly, bibles for two poor children in each parish. The remainder is divided annually between the six parishes. In Croxton, by custom, the distribution is to all widows in the parish plus any cases of special need at the discretion of the trustees. This is distributed annually in December.
An engraving on the north pillar in Croxton Kerrial church refers to the William Chester Charity.

Other Charities

The above two charities are the only ones which remain active within the parish. Others which became defunct, or were deemed by the Charity Commissioner to be too small to administer, include the Goode, Smith and Parnham charities.
