» DesfordDesford Village InformationAccommodationCountry Inn style Bed & Breakfast Blue Bell Inn Barnes CharityFounded by William Barnes of Desford who died in 1729. In his will he gave £100 to the Rector, Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the parish. The interest was to be used for apprenticing poor children in the village. The money was invested in the purchase of land in the Open Fields and when these were enclosed in 1760 the Trustees were allocated 2 fields between Station Road and Leicester Lane, adjoining the Heath Brook, which they still own. (Barns Way commemorates this). Today the Charity is administered (under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners dated 1881) by 8 Trustees: the Rector and 2 Churchwardens, 3 members of the Parish Council and 2 Life Trustees. The trustees meet twice a year in March and November and make small grants to Desford school leavers going on to Higher or Further Education. Anyone wishing to apply for a grant should write to the secretary: Jo Vavasour between September and the beginning of November, supplying their full details of their course and a confirmatory letter from their college.
