Donisthorpe Local History Group was formed in 2001 to promote interest in and record the area’s history, taking into account, social history, architecture, the landscape etc, and when the opportunity arises, to undertake field walking, metal detecting and archaeological projects. The Group is currently researching the history of the local shops (alas none remain), churches, railways, canals and pubs. The route of a Roman road has already having been identified. Archaeological excavations are currently being undertaken at the old brickworks which date from c1886, and when completed the archaeological records, together with documentary research currently being undertaken into the company’s history, will provide a fully documented history of the site and of the Donisthorpe Brick and Pipe Company. These will be deposited in the county archives. If you are interested in taking part or would like further information in any of the above projects your help would be most welcome. (Note – volunteers for excavation work do not need experience, training will be given) Maybe you have some old photos or documents relative to some of the above work, if so it would be very much appreciated if we could have sight of them and perhaps have them safely copiedCONTACT USLast Updated Wed, 27 Aug, 2008. |
