Welcome to the Home page of Dunton Bassett Local History Group's archive of village history.
In 2006 Dunton Bassett Local History Group launched a book...
"Dunton Bassett - A Village History". The book was the result of 3 years hard work and much editing of various texts submitted for inclusion, over the following pages a few of the originally submitted articles and their extracts are included for your interest.
The book was made possible through grant funding from the Local Heritage Initiative, a partnership between the Heritage Lottery Fund, Nationwide Building Society and The Countryside Agency.

The members of the History Group sub-committee, formed to produce this book, were Reg Baker, Alan Hill, John and Claire Hurford, Millie Smith and me, Wendy Warren. We have all worked hard in different ways but all of us would wish to acknowledge that without the enthusiasm, drive and commitment of Alan Hill it is unlikely that we would have succeeded within the time-scale insisted upon by the Heritage Lottery Fund. He was instrumental in obtaining that funding and keeping us all up to scratch.
It was fortunate that during our work on Dunton’s more recent history there were still at least four people who were old enough (two over ninety and two just under) to remember the period first hand. They have willingly assisted us with personal recollections and reminiscences and have provided vital clues to enable us to fill in the gaps. We thank them for their most valuable help.
It is very satisfying to get so much information made available for anyone, interested in the village, to read. As mentioned in the introduction, there is much more detail than appears in the book and much more research that needs to be done. Anyone who is enthused by our stories and has an interest in local history is warmly invited to join the Group and begin the collection of information for the next book – or just enjoy the monthly meetings and the interesting speakers who come to entertain and educate us with their knowledgeable lectures.
