Hello,

My Mother, Joyce Spence was born to a Annie Spence in 1925, Joyce had a sister Alice and a bother Bob. Annie had 3 bothers Hary, Ben, Arthur and I think 3 sisters, Flourence, Elizabeth and Emily. Arthur is mentioned and has photos of him in the 'History of Hathern' or is that 'Old Hathern' the first book that was printed 20 or so years ago, Cricket team Photo and opening of war memorial in the Hathern cemetery, And with wife I think Elizabeth, outside his factory. Annie was sent to gaol for 2 years in 1929 for neglect, Alice's children Joyce and Bob were sent to Barnardo's. childrens home. Alice was 12 yrs at the time and two old for Banardo's. As far has I know Flourence Spence (sister)married and lived in Hathern, Annie's father and Grandfather worked in the mills in Loughborough as a Weaver? Both named Ben? Annie had her children by 3 different men. It must of been a scandal at that time. Annie was born in 1892/3 in Rutland or may be Loughborough but lived in Hathern in the early 20's.

The Spence family had a strong presence in the area so I am hopeing someone has more information about the Spence family and that I can find some lost family members. My mother Joyce is 86 yrs now and living in Melbourne, Alice's son lives in Gainsborough, Bob's 2 sons live in Farnborough(ham) and Ashstead.

Any help very welcome,

Regards

Ian Crocker:)

Dear Ian,

I read your posting with interest. My 3xgreat grandfather was Edward Spence, born in Slawston in 1814, who married Susannah Waterfield from Gretton on 6.8.1838. He died in 1885 and she in 1903. Their children were William b 1838, from whom descends my mother (and her sister, nee Joyce Spence), Charlotte, John, Julia, Matthew (died in childhood), George and Matthew.

I am sure you have been able to find all this on the internet. The problem is that there seems to have been another afmily of Spences in the area at the time. John Spence (b1781) married Anne Bellamy on 8.4.1802 and had children Marry (b1803), Ann 1804, Hannah (1807), Jeffrey 1816 and Julia 1820. No mention of an Edward, sadly, so I am left wondering where my gx3 grandfather descends from. Then there is your family. Slawston wasn't a very big place - everyone must have been called Spence in the early 19th century!

Have your researches turned up anything which may enable me to link these different strands? I would be very interested to discover more, especially as, with my mother and her sister being the only two children, we can only discover one descendant of William (b1838) who may have carried on this branch of the Spence name into the present young generation.

All good wishes

Bill Mash

Hi Ian,Bill,

I was just watching "Michael Woods ,Story of England" on our PBS. station.

Much to my surprise ,I caught a glimpse of the name "Spence" on one of the newspaper articles from Kibworth.

I was wondering if either of you could shed some light on the "Spence" family in that area?

This is a very big "long shot" ,but if I don't ask ,I won't know!!!

My grandfather came to Canada in 1911.

His name was Robert and his wife was Mary Rhind.

That's all i know .

I can't even find his death certificate on ancestry.ca?

I don't know if he had any brothers or sisters.

I know this isn't much to go on,but I'm giving it a try.

By the way...a little info I found out while viviting my son at his cottage in Southampton.Ontario,Canada ...there was a sea captain named Spence from that area. They have quite a history of the seafaring community in the Southampto/Port Elgin areas.

Well thanks for"listening"

Regards

Sharon Spence

There were two Spence families in Anstey, oddly, both on Cropston Road. There was the farming Spences who lived on the farm up near the turn for Thurcaston, and then my familly who lived opposite Link Road. My dad was Barry, mother was Ida, Grandad was Bill, Grandma was Flo. We also have family out in Canada, Saskatewan to be precise. Didn't get on with my parents, and unfortunately lost touch with the Canadian side of the family. They left for Canada around the time of the First World War ish. I think the farm Spences live in Seagrave now. Cheers all. Mark Spence
