Mrs White: I can remember the one bomb we had, where did it fall? I think it fell in the vill… outside the village, but it took the roof off the cottage by the Hall gates. And I can remember the night that it fell, mother heard the whine of the bomb as it was coming down and she pulled me underneath the kitchen table for safety, and it passed over the village, as I say, it took the roof off the cottage by the Hall gates and then carried on and fell in the fields somewhere. I forget where they said he was aiming for, obviously he misjudged his drop, you know, the village wouldn’t have been what he was aiming for. But the evacuee used to go out and come back with what they called incendiary shells, you know, just the shell bits. Oh, I can see them sitting on the draining board now, souvenirs, pieces of shrapnel. Yeah, oh, he didn’t want to go back to London at all, he was so happy in the village.
