Calling Leicestershire's Snappers Leicestershire’s amateur photographers are once again being invited to enter a competition celebrating life in the county for the chance to see their work published Following the success of Leicestershire Through a Lens in 2009, the company behind the competition, Bardon Aggregates, has announced that the contest will run again in 2010, this time with a difference. Throughout 2009, Coalville based company Bardon Aggregates ran the competition appealing for people of all ages to submit photographs which represented what Leicestershire mean to them. With almost 1,000 entries received over the course of the year, just twelve were selected across three age ranges to appear in a special charity calendar. More » Simon Taylor, director of Bardon Aggregates said:“We were overwhelmed with the popularity of the contest last year and since producing the calendar, we’ve had so many requests for it to be repeated this year. Although the format of the competition was very successful, we’ve decided to give entrants an additional challenge by adopting the theme of people and portraits. “We’re therefore appealing for photographs featuring Leicestershire people which portray life in our county. “The recent weather will no doubt have led to some fantastic photographs of people enjoying the snow, and as the seasons progress, we’re hoping to get some great snapshots of what Leicestershire has to offer”. All entries must be accompanied by a permissions form signed by the subject, which is available from www.leicestershirethroughalens.co.uk, and must be accompanied by a caption describing the image. A full list of rules can also be found on the website. Entries for the Winter round are now being accepted until 28th February. The finished calendar will be sold in aid of a variety of Leicestershire causes. « Less

RCC ahead of the game in tackling rural isolation
Posted: Mon, 01 Feb 2010 16:29
As the face of rural Britain gets older, the RCC is ahead of the game in going some way to providing support to elderly people living in rural areas, with the Rutland Community Spirit project. In a recent Countryfile programme John Craven reported that in 10 years time one in four of the UK’s rural population will be a pensioner, which will place increasing pressure on local authorities which are already over-stretched. Rutland Community Spirit was launched in March 2008 with the aim to provide low-level support and advice to people living in the county. Drawing from the shared experience of Gloucestershire Village Agents, which was highlighted in Sunday’s programme, the project has a team of Champions who are out and about in the community, providing advice and assistance to those who are most at risk of losing their independence. As with the Village Agents, Champions are seen as trusted friend and not authority. More » John Craven highlighted the need for ongoing funding to provide schemes similar to that of Rutland Community Spirit and Gloucestershire Village agents to prevent what is currently a social issue, becoming a crisis. Originally a two-year pilot, the success of the Rutland Community Spirit project has meant that additional financial support has been secured to ensure the project continues until spring 2011. The RCC is now working closely with the local authority and PCT in Leicestershire to work out how Community Spirit can be rolled out to incorporate the rural areas of Leicestershire as well as Rutland. For more information about the Rutland Community Spirit Project please contact Sue Renton on 01572 720282 or email srenton@ruralcc.org.uk « Less

![]() Crime-fighting charity, Crimestoppers, has launched its first ever blog entitled ‘I spy a crime' under the guise of good citizen superheroes in a bid to reach a wider audience through its online communications. The blog is written through the characters of The Caped Crimestopper, Mask of Manuel and Granny Robyn who also form part of the charity's generic marketing materials that were launched earlier this year. The blog takes on a much lighter tone compared to the rest of Crimestoppers' work, with the aim of reaching wider audiences. Crimestoppers campaigns, funny calls received and crime news are some of the topics blogged about.
