Mill Field Wood

Mill Field Wood was a Millennium Project proposed by Fleckney Village Trust, ably led by Chairperson Jan Nix. The idea was that the wood should be a short walking distance from Fleckney, and open to the general public. The 7.6 hectare (18.9 acre) site was acquired by the Woodland Trust in the year 2000 A.D. after a successful fund raising appeal organised by Fleckney Village Trust. The appeal was supported by many private donations, Leicestershire County Council, Harborough District Council, and Fleckney, Kibworth and Saddington Parish Councils and a number of charitable trusts. The planting of the trees was carried out by the villagers of Fleckney, people from surrounding villages, and anyone who was prepared to help. The year of the planting was 2000 AD. Planting was supervised by the Woodland Trust. The ongoing management of the wood is also supervised by the Woodland Trust, and carried out by volunteers, mainly Village Trust members.

The major trees are oak; ash and silver birch, with smaller numbers of field maple, Shrubs, such as hazel, blackthorn and hawthorn have also been planted by the rides around the fringes. All the plants are local to this area and will provide a valuable habitat for wildlife.
