The inclined plane boat lift on its opening day in 1900
The Foxton Inclined Plane Trust (FIPT) is a Registered Charity run by volunteers drawn from its membership. We have some very experienced and knowledgeable people who love our canals, and in particular, love Foxton's unique Inclined Plane Boat Lift. Foxton Inclined Plane Trust runs the Foxton Canal Museum which is also our headquarters.
The cost of restoring the Inclined Plane to full working order is currently estimated at £11m. Much of this will be raised through grants and the Heritage Lottery Fund but the Trust still needs to do its share.
Volunteers take our fundraising stall out and about to local fetes and fairs including boat rallies not just to raise money but also to capture public interest.
We also run fundraising events down at the locks the remaining one in 2012 is our Christmas Music Event on 16th December.
Could you lend a hand at this events? The only skills necessary are enthusiasm, honesty and a sense of humour, we will supply the rest.
If you feel you could help then either contact the museum on 0116 2792657 or email email@example.com. Any help or skills you can bring to help us will be much appreciated by our fundraisers.

How Can I Help?
VOLUNTEERS are a key part of the Trust and its aims to restore the Inclined Plane. With the exception of the Museum‘s full time staff, everything done by FIPT is done by Volunteers!
There is something for every volunteer at Foxton
Out and about with our Display Stand – We need volunteers to help with our fund raising activities and to take the message out to other venues – canal festivals, local fetes, carnivals, late night shopping, etc.
In the Museum "Front of House" – dealing with customer enquiries and entry, and working in our shop. Behind the scenes – sorting and recording the archive, cleaning and labelling historic items, helping to produce new displays. Help is required to run the Museum during holiday periods, and at weekends and bank holidays when one member of staff is not sufficient to field questions from the public, take entry payments and deal with sales.
On Site – We need your help to restore the site and keep it neat and tidy for visitors. Work parties maintain our outdoor exhibits to ensure they are safe for visitors. Volunteers learn new skills and meet interesting people. Work parties are currently held at any time which is convenient for volunteers and fits in with the plans.
If you would like to help in any of these areas please contact the museum on 0116 2792657 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have two opportunities for a volunteer position at Foxton.
Wages: the satisfaction of a job well done and working with a team of enthusiasts to improve Foxton.
Hours: to suit yourself, you will need to spend some time at Foxton, but much of the work could be done from home.
Volunteer Co-ordinator. We need someone to recruit and co-ordinate volunteers. The co-ordinator will keep records of the volunteers and keep in touch with them. When we need help, you will be asked to organise the volunteers for specific jobs. This will mean knowing what we plan to do. We also need you to actively recruit new volunteers. Training will be provided if necessary and you will learn new skills which could be transferred to other occupations. This would suit someone who likes working with people. We would be very happy to have someone learn as they go along.
Publicity officer. We need a person to co-ordinate the Trusts publicity efforts in raising the profile of the Trust and the Museum. You would be responsible for press releases and getting them to local newspapers and national magazines, radio and TV. You would also be responsible for distribution of posters and leaflets. Training will be provided. This would suit someone who likes working with people. We would be very happy to have someone learn as they go along.
