Rural communities must ensure they can play a role in the economy of the future or they face becoming "dormitories for the elderly".
That is the warning from the chairman of a group aimed at helping the Leicestershire countryside thrive.
Councillor Lesley Pendleton, from Leicestershire Rural Partnership, was speaking after a recent Government-commissioned report warned young people were being driven from rural areas by a lack of jobs and affordable housing.
The report calls for loosening of planning rules, better transport links and broadband access.

GREAT EASTON PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

PARISH COUNCIL TAX

Having subsidised the very necessary refurbishment of the village hall, we were then hit by a very nearly 100% increase in the bill for street lighting, and the cost of replacing the defective and dangerous street light standards in Barnsdale, Lounts Crescent and Brook Lane. This unexpected expenditure has swallowed up all our reserves and we have very reluctantly decided that we must increase the parish council tax this year by £500. This is the first raising of our precept for over 12 years but is unavoidable. The additional charge for each household in the village will amount to about £2 in the year or 4p a week. More »

DOG FOULING

May we remind dog owners of their responsibilities to keep our streets and verges clean from dog fouling. In particular, as spring and summer the light evenings and various school holidays approach we would like to ask dog-owning parents to make sure their children know what is required when they take the dog out, and are provided with the necessary equipment

THE NEW PLAYING FIELD – CLARKE’S PIECE

At the time of writing progress is being slowly made with the legal arrangements for the village to take over responsibility for the field, to be known as Clarke’s piece to commemorate the generosity of Nick Clarke and his family who donated the land. Once we can get over the law’s delays the Recreation Ground Committee can get to work in raising the money needed and setting up the play equipment and soi on.

A proper playing field for the children is something the village has always lacked.

And we should all be grateful to the members of this committee, who, under the leadership of Charlie Jefferson have already put in an enormous amount of work on this project.
