Great Glen Methodist Church War Memorial

ggmethodist

This is not so much a War Memorial as a Memorial Plaque and it has an interesting history.

The original church was opened for services at about the end of October 1827 and by 1927 the Trustees decided to do some up-dating. It was decided to build an organ chamber so that the then organ could be moved from where it stood in front of the vestry door. At the same time Arthur Wakerley, a Leicester architect, Wesleyan Methodist and public benefactor, offered to buy a reading desk and a new matching Communion rail in oak to replace the originals. His offer was accepted and the desk and rail were installed in memory of his son Arthur John 'Jack' Wakerley who had been killed in 1917. A brass plate was fastened to the lectern to commemorate the death of Jack.

The lectern can be seen on the right of the picture and the plaque is attached to the front.

Jack Wakerley therefore has no connection with Great Glen apart from his religious denomination and the fact that he may have preached in the church during his short time as a local preacher before joining the army.
