MOMUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS IN ST CUTHBERT's CHURCHYARDTranscribed by the Great Glen U3A Family History Group By kind permission of the Reverend Mary Ireland Compiled by Jane Moelwyn-Hughes and Toni Smith MBE September 2006 About the ProjectThe recording of the monumental inscriptions inside and outside the church was undertaken as a summer project for the University of the Third Age, (U3A) Great Glen Family History Group in 2006. All care has been taken to ensure accuracy of the transcription, however a visit to the church or churchyard to check with the original inscriptions is recommended. Words from many inscriptions were unable to be read for reasons such as broken stones, writing worn away through time etc., and so some blank spaces occur in the transcriptions. The aim was to record the words exactly as they are found on the stone – so variations in spelling are a common occurrence. Some of the very old graves were transcribed and published in 1798 in a book called ‘The History and Antiquities of Leicestershire’ by Nichols and this can be seen at the County Record Office. Toni Smith What is included on this site? Not included: ![]() Roll of Honour The Roll of Honour from WW1 is hanging inside the church. These names are not included in the index. It shows all of the men from the village who fought in the War including those who died and who appear on the village War Memorial. ![]() Commemorative Plaque This plaque, donated by grateful parents, which is on the gate leading into the churchyard from Church Road is not included in the index. SURNAME INDEX TO THE MONUMENTSLayout of ChurchyardThe churchyard was divided into a number of areas and each area was given an alphabetical reference. The monuments in that area were then numbered starting at the road and moving towards the churchyard paths. Thus G1 is next to the old A6 and G88 is almost opposite the church porch. The areas lettered from A to P can be seen on the layout drawing. Layouts of the separate areas showing the positions of individual graves are available if required. Contact the Great Glen U3A Family History Group if you cannot find the grave you are looking fo. ![]() Churchyard Layout Key to Gravestone TypeBMHS Black marble headstone No member in the U3A Group of transcribers is an expert in geology, and so the type of stone described for the gravestones is our best guess, and not to be taken as definite!
