Village War Memorials

Village War Memorial

The field in which the Memorial stands was given by Major E C O Packe to the village specifically for the building of a War Memorial. It is made of Cornish granite and contains the names of the 14 men of the village who did not return from the Great War. It was commemorated on 1st January 1921 and unveiled by Sir Charles Yates, MP. It was added to in 1923 to include 6 more village men who had since died of the effects of WWI.

Nine more names were added at the end of the Second World War at a ceremony held on 6th July 1947 by the British Legion.

The lettering on the Memorial had deteriorated by 2006 and the local branch of the Royal British Legion together with Great Glen Parish Council successfully applied for grants to carry out remedial work on the Memorial. This was carried out by a local stonemason and the rejuvenated Memorial was rededicated in the presence of the members of the village branch on 15th April 2007.

Roll of Honour WW1

Inside the church there is also a Roll of Honour which purports to list all of the men of the village who went to war during the Great War. It is not known whether or not this is a definitive list or just includes the members of the families who were affiliated to St Cuthbert's church.

There is a brass commemorative plaque in Great Glen Methodist Church to Captain Arthur John Wakerley who died in World War I. This plaque is attached to the lectern inside the Church Worship Area.
