Hoby searches for history of four lost servicemen

Hoby is hoping that this year's Open Gardens weekend 0n 14th and 15th June (11am to 5pm each day) will help resolve the mystery of just who were four men remembered on the War Memorial in All Saints Church. The Open Gardens weekend is being organised by the Friends of Hoby Church to raise funds to restore the War Memorial and the North aisle roof and all visitors will be asked whether they know who these men were.
For most of the names on the Memorial, villagers have found details from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission of the date they died, how old they were, where they are buried and the name of their next of kin. From this they have discovered that all actually lived in Hoby and were in the census records. But four names are baffling the villagers as the Commission could not supply next of kin details; they are hoping that publicity surrounding the Open Gardens weekend might help to shed light on who these servicemen were:
William H. Crane (R.A.F.)
William E. Eldred The Buffs)
George H. Sharp (The Leicester Regiment)
John C Wheatley (Notts and Derby Regiment)

Diane Horsfield, Hoby with Rotherby Parish Council Clerk and one of the Friends of Hoby Church has said that as part of the conservation of our War Memorial, we would like to be able to identify those remembered in more detail. Unfortunately, without more information, looking for them in the census will be like looking for a needle in a haystack. If anyone can help we would be delighted to know more - they can contact Churchwarden Vic Allsop by email to vic-hoby@fsmail.net or by telephone on 01644 434697.

New Equipment for the Parish Internet Cafe

The Parish Internet Cafe, "The Greasy Spoon", has just received two new laptop computers so it now has a total of three. All of them are on WiFi and we have a WiFi printer available. All this equipment has been provided by the Leicestershire Rural Partnership to whom we are extremely grateful. A scanner and a laminator is also available.
The Internet Cafe is held in the Methodist Church on Mondays and Thursdays, 10.00am until 12.00 noon. Free internet access is available to all as well as training in basic computer skills.

Dog Fouling in the Parish

The Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act (2005) (Dog Control orders) makes it an offence not to clean up after your dog in our villages. Not being aware of dog fouling, not being present at the time of fouling, or not having the means to pick it up are not an excuse under the legislation. A fixed penalty fine of £75 can be issued or the penalty on summary conviction is £1000.

Please be a responsible dog owner & keep our villages safe & enjoyable for everyone. Carry collecting bags & clean up after your dog.
