Ibstock Historical Society
Ibstock Historical Society is a group of local people with an interest in the history of the village and the surrounding area. We meet on Saturday mornings (see below) between 10.00am and 12 noon at The Community Shop at 12 Chapel Street. We also organise occasional talks of local interest on a Tuesday evening, starting at 7.30pm - these are separately advertised. Annual membership of the Society is available for £5.00, but anyone is welcome to attend meetings and the charge for visitors is £2.00 per meeting.
Join us for Heritage Saturdays at The Community Shop, 12 Chapel Street, Ibstock between 10am and 12 noon to share our archive and get help and inspiration for your own projects.
We have recently acquired some records relating to properties in Ibstock and will be working on these and our photograph archive on Saturdays, so this is your chance to have a look at what we have available and get involved in this aspect of our work. These sessions are free at present, but we ask for a donation for your refreshments!
We are also working on several aspects of Ibstock's history with a view to producing display material and publications. Themes include coal mining, clay working and agricultural heritage.
Prompted by Ibstock Baptist Chapel's exhibition to mark the 90th Anniversary of the ending of the Great War, we have begun work to record the War Memorials in Ibstock. We have put some photographs of the War Memorial and the exhibition on our 'space' - http://ibstockhistory.spaces.live.com - and are now beginning to record other memorials in the village.
At our meetings, we usually have presentations by members of their progress and a chance to share resources. We occasionally book speakers where we can identify people who can help us to develop our understanding of Ibstock's past. If you have any thoughts about interesting topics or speakers, please let us know.
Please check the calendar section of the website for details of the next meeting and come along and join us.
Landshapes was a project undertaken by the National Forest Company with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. As part of the project, a website was created and several members of Ibstock Historical Society, and others, contributed material to this site which you may find of interest. The project has now come to an end but copies of the book that was produced are still available and proceeds from the sale of the book are reinvested in helping to maintain the website and other local activity.
