November - Sacrifice

We rightly remember this month that our freedom was won at a high price for those who served in war, particular for those who did not live to see the end of conflict. Sacrifice is a term we often use to describe the payment of their lives for our liberation, and we wonder during the silence what it means to pay that ultimate price. Their sacrifice also provides us with a picture of what Jesus did, laying down life for another; only in his case he died for all – his enemies as well as for his followers. The ultimate sacrifice – laying down his life for those who would kill him – that they might live. We might not understand the spiritual mechanics of how one death can pay for our guilt but his demonstration of love in action to bring us reconciliation with God is surely attractive to us all.
