Worship - But I can't singThis month we are continuing our look at the different elements of church services by considering worship. For many that’s the bit where everyone stands up and sings a hymn, but actually there’s more to it than that. For a start there are many different style of worship, from celtic to charismatic, chanting to choruses. It’s often said that worship style is what divides the church, but I think there’s a tremendously rich variety across and within the different denominations which we must maintain. But we’ve still only talked about singing. Worship can also utilise other media such as video, silence, or speaking. Essentially it is an opportunity for us to try and express what we feel to God, alongside others, in whatever way is appropriate, and shouldn’t therefore be restricted to one means of doing that (although of course we all have our favourites). But worship should also affect us too, and not just during a service. As we walk from the church building we will, I hope, be thinking how we can serve God by serving others during the week, which is in effect a continuation of our act of worship.
