July 07 - Pink or Green?

I was on a plane once with a colleague from work travelling home from a business meeting when we witnessed a beautiful sunset. The sky was streaked with reds and oranges and below us the cloud tops were tipped in bright pink like a blanket of candy floss. We were both admiring it and after a while he said to me “Tell me – are those clouds pink or green?” I’d forgotten he was colour blind, and the question took me by surprise, how could it be beautiful if you didn’t know whether it was pink or green? However I realised that it was an equally wonderful sight to him, but he perceived it differently and the language he might use to describe it would differ too.

So it is, I realised, with the love of God too. Two people may have completely different experiences of God’s love in very different circumstances. And yet they can both speak of his wonderful love for them – albeit in different terms. It’s good to hear how others have experienced it in their lives and hear them describe it from their standpoint. So whether you perceive his love to be pink or green I’d encourage you to swap stories with others and be encouraged that you are part of his rich multi-threaded tapestry of love.
