Carrots and Courage

Have you ever put your effort into something which then turned out to be a complete waste of time? I think I mentioned a few months ago that I like gardening but despite planting, weeding and reseeding I completely failed to grow any carrots last year, the slugs, I suspect, ate every seedling. My labour was completely in vain!

At the Baptist church we have adopted one particular verse from the Bible for the year – it’s our motto for 2007 if you like – “Stand firm, let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain”. It’s encouraging to know that, unlike growing carrots, whatever we do for God will never be fruitless labour. We may not always see the results, but we can trust that God will accept our efforts and multiply their effect – we just have to listen to Him and then know that we can throw ourselves fully into whatever He would have us do.
