This time we have two speakers who are sure to be fascinating. In the morning, local magistrate Ros Marsh will talk about "The Magistrates Service, Past and Present"; it seemed fitting to hold this talk in what was once the No1 Magistrates Court in Woodgate Chambers, now beautifully restored as a conference chamber. (Most Loughborough locals still think of Woodgate Chambers as "the old Magistrates Court".) Most of us know lamentably little about the work that these dedicated volunteers do and Ros is sure to leave us much better informed. More »
After lunch Nick Marshall will give some insights into "The life of a Victorian Servant." Many of us will know that our grandmothers or great grandmothers left school very young to take up work at the local "big house" as kitchen or parlour-maids, and that their brothers perhaps worked in the stables or as "boots" but what were their duties, how hard did they work, what were they paid? Nick will be able to answer our questions. Nick is well known in re-enactment circles (he's travelled all over the country and to Europe as part of re-enactment groups) and his illustrated talks have long been popular in the county.
It's possible to come for just for one of these sessions. For more details contact Mandy Grocott at mandy.grocott@ntlworld.com or on 01509 568054 » Less
