» LubenhamLubenham Village HallLubenham Village Hall (often called 'The sweat box') was originally built in 1928, on land that was owned by Lord Paget. Lady Zia Wernher, daughter of the Grand Duke Michael of Russia, who resided at Thorpe Lubenham Hall, offered to donate a sum of money on the condition that the building was named the Women's Unionist Hall and so it remained until 1976 when it was in need of updating. In 1976 Lord Paget offered to donate the land on which it stood, on condition that the village looked after and improved the Hall for use of all of the village. A new management committee was formed and with the help of a generous interest free loan from a local businessman and a great deal of community help the new toilet block was constructed and the Hall enjoyed many more years of service to the community. By 1992 the maintenance on hall had become a major task the kitchen badly needed updating and villagers again rallied to build the new frontage with the help of a grant. Entrance hall, kitchen, store rooms, and a disabled toilet were added, the old part of the hall was refurbished , alterations were made to the fire doors, the roof was strengthened and and insulated a new floor was laid and redecorate undertaken With the help of a mortgage and grants from local authorities, enough money had been raised and the new front foyer was started. Fundraising continued and the mortgage was paid off. A number of lottery bids were submitted unsuccessfully until, Last Updated Tue, 9 May, 2006. |
