History of LutterworthThe village of Lutterworth was probably established in 1066 by the Norman Conquest, after Anglo-Saxons had settled in the area to be near the River Swift. The village slowly grew into a town and by 1485 was flourishing. Lutterworth was described as 'scant half so bigge as Loughborow' by Leland in 1510. Due to its position in between Rugby and Leicester, it was important in the days of coaches and horses. This can be seen in the number of coaching inns that existed in the past, some still survive today. The town entered a period of rapid expansion with the introduction of the railway in 1899. This was taken out of service 70 years later but Lutterworth still enjoys good communication links with a junction to the M1, the M6 nearby and Rugby Station only 20 minutes away. Recently the building of Magna Park has brought industry to the area. Information based on accounts in 'Lutterworth Past and Present' and thisislutterworth.com.
