The Market Bosworth & District Natural History Society is a group of very active local natural history enthusiasts.

The Society enjoys a comprehensive programme of both indoor and outdoor meetings. In addition the Society also manages a wildflower meadow on Bosworth Park.

The Society was formed in January 1976 by twenty two local natural history enthusiasts. During the inaugural meeting it was agreed that the aims of the Society should be:-
• To cover every aspect of natural history, and cater for all interests.
• To hold monthly indoor meetings, and outdoor meetings wherever possible.
• To make detailed investigations, with records, of particular sites.

During the intervening years the Society has held closely to these aims and has grown to a current membership of around seventy.

Details of the 2008 events, both indoor meetings and outings, are given below. Visitors are always welcome.

For indoor meetings there is no charge for members (but there is an annual membership fee). Visitors are charged £2.00.

2008 Indoor Meetings

Jan 15th: In search of wildebeeste - Peter Sykes
A photographic safari across Kenya, including a wildebeeste or two.

Feb 19th: Treasures of the Islands - Gianpiero Ferrari
Travels through the Aegean islands in search of orchids.

Mar 18th: Climate change - Brian Eversham
Climate change and its effect on wildlife.

Apr 15th: Biology, aliens & myths of plant galls - Chris Leach
An introduction to plant galls, including their biology, uses, and the new galls entering the country.

May 20th: Studying moths - Graham Finch
A potted history of the study of these fascinating night-time insects, including how it all started, and some of the characters involved.

Sept 16th: Tails of India - Steve Woodward
A well-researched guide to the wildlife and ecology of this fascinating country.

Oct 28th: Plants from the most beautiful valley on earth - Hazel Kaye
A ground-breaking expedition, hunting for rare plants in the Everest area.

Nov 18th: Images from way down under - John Tinning
Stunning photographs of the landscape, orchids, mammals and birds of Western Australia.

Dec 2nd: Members evening
A chance for all our members to show their photos and wildlife exhibits.

Jan 20th 2009: Calke Abbey – a warden’s view - Bill Cove
The work of the wardens on the Calke estate, and their day to day sightings.
