Deliveries to the camp
My name is Peter Morrell. Sixty years ago I was a young boy aged 9 years living in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. I was near the railway station and saw many Polish refugees arrive. They had come to make their homes here. At that time many would live in converted Nissen huts. In 1947 we had two Polish men lodging with us for a short period of time. Five years later I had a part time job as a butcher boy. We would visit a site at Ashby Foleville near here, which was occupied by the Polish community. We would be greeted by “dzien dobre”, which is “good morning”. They would gather around and buy our products. They would point at the bones with marrow inside and say “…..”. They would make soup with these. I noted that they grew their own tobacco plants. Years later I made a friend, Adam Kozak, he is now over 90. He spoke 5 languages but very little English. I must ask him, “was he on that train that day?”. Last Updated Wed, 12 Apr, 2006. |
