The Butcher Boy
So you were saying that you went into the camps, you were selling something?
Yes, well because I was only 14, I worked for the London Central Meat Company, which was a little shop in Nottingham Street, it’s now taken over by the Alliance and Leicester. I used to go out with another, the butcher, in a van. We used to go into this, I can’t remember, we used to go under this big archway. I think it must have been a quite a big house in the grounds where it was. We used to just park up and the Polish people used to just come to us in a little queue and get whatever they wanted and then we used to go. I can’t remember too much about the others but I do think I did visit the one on Kirby lane but I can’t really say for certain that I went to that one. But I do remember Ashby Folville, in fact the boss wanted me for a full time job but it were a little bit too cold for me being a butcher boy. Yes, I used to make sausages and I even cut a cow’s head in half, urgh, and a tongue, cut the tongue out.
