Carlton Hayes Memorial Dedication Service

Carlton Hayes Memorial

On Thursday 20th December 2007 at 2pm at Narborough cemetery, a dedication of a Memorial to 1,150 patients of the former Carlton Hayes Hospital was held.

Between 1908 and 1994, a reserved section of Narborough Cemetery was used for the interment of many of the patients who died at the hospital. Unfortunately, almost all of the graves are unmarked.

Narborough Parish Council, who operates the Cemetery, decided that it would be appropriate to place a memorial to the people buried there. Help was sought to fund this project and contacts were made with the Health Trust and with the Charity of Carlton Hayes Hospital.

Alliance & Leicester plc, whose headquarters now stand on the site of the hospital, made a donation to cover the cost of the service. The Memorial has been manufactured by local stonemason, W W Busby & Son. It is a substantial block of Balmoral Red Granite with a sloping top bearing the following inscription:

On the day, guests invited by Narborough Parish Council, included Alliance & Leicester plc, the Charity of Carlton Hayes Hospital and Leicestershire Partnership Health Trust which will be present for the Dedication by Father Nick Burton, the Rector of Narborough All Saints’ Church.
