Bus Service Protest Meeting- 24 June 2009
Bus Service Protest Meeting- 24 June 2009

Parish Councillor, Maggie Kilfeather writes: On Wednesday 24th June, 2009, The Newton Burgoland and Swepstone Parish Council meeting was well attended by villagers, who filled the school hall to its limits. Tony Kirk who is Group Manager (Passenger Transport Unit) for Leicestershire County Council, came as a guest speaker to explain why the 92/93 bus service is being withdrawn. Some of the questions asked were:

How did was the passenger survey conducted?
Why were villagers not consulted?
What happens about children who need to leave school earlier or later?
How were local residents going to get to the doctors? More »

Tony Kirk stated that the survey was conducted by leaving leaflets on the bus seats for a 2 week period. Unfortunately in practise, few people read them and consequently did not phone the help line. This was the only consultation with the residents of the village. As most people were unaware of this phone number, hardly anyone called.

As for the teenagers in the village it was a case of ‘tough’!

Mr Kirk was unaware that residents go to three different medical practices in three different villages, and was therefore not prepared to comment on that issue.

It was also noted that ‘Arriva’ are to continue to travel through Packington, even though no one gets on the bus there, as they already have a Number Nine bus service.

Tony Kirk said that he would take on board comments made at the meeting and would investigate further. However, he did state quite clearly that the 92/93 service will stop with effect from Monday 13th July 2009, with ‘Arriva’ taking over the service commercially. The deal had been done.

Local residents agreed that the next step forward is to contact local MP David Taylor. « Less
