This was our biggest, and probably the best, Festival to date with nearly 50 Scarecrows around the Village and a spectacular tableau at the school. The village was very busy and we were lucky to have lovely warm autumn sunshine on Saturday.
The weekend started with the Official Opening of the Bob Bown Memorial Field by Mrs Peggy Bown, accompanied by her daughter Helen.A fantastic facility for the children.
Judging of the Scarecrows took place in the afternoon and our careful and considerate Judges were Jenny Cowdroy, Lilian Coleman and Mary Belsham from Bradgate Flower Club. The Prizes and Certificates were presented by Councillor David Snartt on Sunday afternoon. At the Judges recommendation, because they were so impressed with their entry, a special Merit Award was made to Carole & Claire's Pre-school Play Group. The People's Choice was won by Lawrence & Sue Pritchard for "Scared Crow".
The School Fete was a great success on Saturday and included broomstick racing! Scarecrow Teas were available and very popular, in the Village Hall on Sunday, with delicious home made cakes generously donated by local residents from whom we had wonderful support.
Other events took place in the Church, beautifully decorated for Harvest festival, with a "Dip in the Bell Foundry" game and an opportunity to ring a Church bell. This was very popular as was the second-hand book stall and the "Angelic Choir"
Desford Pedallers Veteran Cycle Club cycled around the village on Sunday afternoon on their "Penny farthings" much to the delight of young and old. We all enjoyed the singing of the Retro Barbershop Quartet.
There was plenty going on in the Village Hall, with a fascinating Village Archive display, jewellery,Flower Club & card stall,Art & Photograph Exhibition.
We were delighted to see so many families walking through the village enjoying the Scarecrows The main object of the Festival is for everyone to have a lot of fun both making a Scarecrow and enjoying all the others. However, a bonus was that we expect the money raised this year for the School, Gardening Club, Youth Club and other village organisations to be around £2500.
Congratulations to the Winners and a very big thank you to everyone who made a Scarecrow, Sharon & Tony at the Village Store, the PTA, Julia and all the Staff at the School and our advertisers. The Scarecrows were fantastic. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.
The Festival next year will be held on 26th/27th September, 2009.
