PALs offering help to patients and carers
PALs offering help to patients and carers

Patients and carers are being reminded they can get more information on health services or give feedback on the care they have received through NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).

PALS is a customer care service for the NHS which offers free information and advice, with contact kept confidential if required.

“We try to resolve any problems or concerns patients may experience when using health services,” said PALS manager Becky Millward. “Our aim is to do this quickly and informally before the issue becomes more serious. More »

“PALS also has access to a wealth of local and national health information and can signpost people to other organisations and support groups which can help.”

She added: “We also want to hear from patients or the public who have comments or suggestions about local health services. The feedback we receive from patients and visitors is used to improve local health services.”

PALS can be contacted by calling 01455 441 971 or 01509 564 444, by texting your enquiry to 07747 006 980 or emailing pals@lcr.nhs.uk

Letters can be sent to Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), FREEPOST-RRHS-EUHR-LCZANHS, Leicestershire County and Rutland, Lakeside House, 4 Smith Way, Grove Park, Enderby, Leicestershire, LE19 1SS.

NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland is also giving patients and carers a chance to speak out about their experiences of using hospitals, GP practices and community health services in an online questionnaire.

People have until 30 September to complete the Patient Experience Questionnaire, which can be found on the trust’s website at www.lcr.nhs.uk/patientexperience « Less

Migraine Awareness Week (5-11 September)
Migraine Awareness Week (5-11 September)

Do you know the difference between a migraine and a headache? NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland is urging everyone to find out during Migraine Awareness Week (5-11 September).

Migraines affect around 15 per cent of adults in the UK – one in four women and one in 12 men – and, along with a throbbing pain at the front or side of the head, can also lead to feeling sick and sensitivity to light.

Sufferers can often get a warning sign – known as aura – which includes visual problems and stiffness in the neck, shoulders or limbs, and there are often five stages to a migraine, although not everyone will experience all of these. More »

  • Pre-headache stage – possible changes in mood, energy levels, behaviour and appetite
  • Aura – some people experience a sensation, or aura, before a migraine, such as flashes of light, blind spots and difficulty focusing
  • Headache stage – pulsating or throbbing pain on one side of the head, with nausea or vomiting and sensitivity to bright light and loud sounds
  • Resolution stage – most attacks gradually fade away, or can stop after vomiting
  • Recovery stage – feeling of exhaustion and weakness

Dr Chris Trzcinski, a GP and chairman of NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland’s professional executive committee, said: “Unfortunately, there is no cure for migraines, which can be extremely debilitating and affect your quality of life.

“They are thought to be caused by changes in the chemicals of the brain, in particular levels of serotonin which is the feel-good chemical, and triggers can include stress, tiredness, caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruit and cheese, bright lights, loud noises and changes in climate, as well as some medicines.

“Keeping a migraine diary could help to identify triggers such as stress or certain foods and mean you are able to avoid these in the future.

“There are also over-the-counter painkillers available, but sufferers who feel these are not helping to manage their migraines, or those who have noticed a change in their migraine symptoms, or who get more frequent attacks, should visit their GP.”
