Kirby Bellars Tollhouse
Posted: Tue, 01 Jul 2008

My name is Tony Ingham and I live in Worcestershire but was born in Leicester. My grandmother gave me some tollhouse record books many years ago relating to parts of three different years in the mid-1800s. Some years ago I gave copies of these books to the Leicester Record Office but still have the originals. They were compiled by her great-grandfather Stephen BARRASS and great-great-grandfather Richard BARRASS whilst they kept the tollhouse, which was on the Melton side of the junction of the A607 (Melton) Road and Thorpe Satchville Road, roughly opposite the site of the former Kirby Hall. Lists of tolls collected, (although not the individual charges), and wages paid to the road-gang who maintained the road (with their surnames only) are contained in the books. My questions are - does anyone have any photographs of the former tollhouse, which has long since been demolished, or indeed any further details of the family or the premises?
The shape of the building appears roughly on the Google map of the village on this website, dated late 1800s.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help on adingham@tiscali.co.uk

Ovarian cancer is called the silent killer. But you can help to change that. Every year over 7,000 women across the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. 5,000 of them will die. That’s a death rate of over 70% - similar to the survival rate for breast cancer.

One of those women was my daughter Sarah who died at the age of just 28 earlier this year only a few weeks after being diagnosed.

Ovarian cancer action is the leading ovarian cancer charity in the UK. Ovarian cancer action funds research into ovarian cancer, raises awareness of the disease and gives a voice to women affected by it.

To raise funds for the charity our nephew is planning on doing a Triathlon on the 28th June 2008 at Market Bosworth, leicestershire. Open water swim 750m in very cold water, followed by 20K bike ride followed by 5K run/shuffle to the finish.

Any support for this deserving cause would be appreciated by the family and donations can be made online through the justgiving website

Thanks
Graham
