Charnwood Orchestra Russian Concert

Charnwood Orchestra Russian concert on June 27th 09 at the Church of St James the Greater, Leicester.

Charnwood Orchestra will give a concert of Russian music in the Church of St James the Greater, Leicester on Saturday June 27th starting at 7.45pm.

The programme will consist of the following pieces:

Polovstian Dances Borodin
Trumpet Concerto Arutiunian
Symphony No 5 Tchaikovsky

There will be a wine and soft drinks bar during the interval.

Tickets cost £8.00, £6.00 (concessions) and £2.00 for accompanied children under 16. They will be available by visiting the Leicester Tourist Information Centre, Town Hall Square, from the Orchestra Secretary on 07718153117 or rodgers_david@hotmail.com or on the door. More »

Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances form a much loved stand-alone concert piece comprised of a selection from his opera, Prince Igor. In the opera the dances are performed with a chorus but, as is common practice, we will omit the chorus parts. Borodin was an amateur composer for much of his life but Prince Igor was his great masterpiece. Judging by the number of shows (eg Kismet), popular music (eg a hip hop song version) and products (eg a playstation game) that have adapted his themes, Borodin created some very memorable tunes and a cracking good showpiece.
Alexander Arutiunian, born in 1920, is an Armenian composer known particularly for his “flashy” trumpet concerto. It has a very Gypsyish, Russian sound using both the melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian folk music alternating between beautiful reflections of impressionism and rough folk dances, the sentimental and the volcanic. It has become a mainstay of every trumpet player’s repertory. Our soloist will be Anthony Thompson.
Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is as intensely dramatic as anything he ever wrote. It is based on a “motto” theme whose topic is Providence. The theme, derived from Glinka’s opera “A Life for the Tsar” is heard in all four movements. In the first movement, it has a funereal character but gradually transforms into a triumphant march that dominates the last movement. Tchaikovsky creates a very clear musical exposition of the idea of "ultimate victory through strife". Perhaps that explains the popularity of the Fifth Symphony during World War II. « Less

Photographers Invited To Focus On Leicestershire

PHOTOGRAPHERS INVITED TO FOCUS ON LEICESTERSHIRE

With only one month remaining for amateur photographers to enter the Spring round of the Leicestershire Through a Lens competition, organisers are encouraging keen snappers to take up their cameras.

With the winners of the first and second round of the ‘Leicestershire Through a Lens’ competition revealed, there are just six remaining spaces in the special 2010 calendar to be filled by the area’s photographers.

The competition, launched by Bardon Aggregates, invites photographers of all ages to get creative and capture the very essence of life in Leicestershire on camera. Over four hundred entries were received from across the region for the Autumn and Winter rounds and now people are invited to get snapping and enter the Spring round of the competition. More »

Simon Taylor, Bardon Aggregates’ regional director said: “We received some really outstanding entries in the first two rounds, and I’m sure that the standard is only going to get higher as the competition progresses.

“The Spring season provides us with some of the most extraordinary scenes with weather extremes providing a varied backdrop.”

Budding photographers are welcome to enter as many of their images as they wish for a chance to win £200 worth of Jessops vouchers and to see their work included in the special 2010 calendar which will be distributed to schools to aid their fundraising. The deadline for entries is 30th June.

The judging panel, which is made up of Deputy Councillor Mr Roger Blackmore, Baroness Jennifer Gretton, the Mercury’s very own picture editor Jason Senior, and Bardon Aggregates’ Simon Taylor, will shortlist a number of entries from across the age categories, and the winners will be revealed at a presentation evening early in July.

The three age categories for entrants are; 11 years and under, 12-18 years and 19 years and over.

Footpaths
Posted: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 10:44

We are very fortunate in having some lovely walks around our village. With us enjoying some great weather (at least at the time of writing!) the Parish Council wanted to remind people that a copy of the footpath map for the village can be seen at the Parish Office. For those who want to walk slightly further a field, Leicestershire County Council has a very good range of local Parish and longer walks on their web site at www.leics.gov.uk/parish_walks.htm.

Allotments and garden sharing
Posted: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 10:41

The Parish Council have been trying for some time to find some land for allotments for the village and as you may remember there was an appeal in the Gazette for any one with any suggestions to contact the Council. Unfortunately all investigations of land have proved unsuccessful. The Council however is to continue to look for suitable land and local land agents are being contacted and asked to keep Council informed should any land become available. In the meantime the Council is prepared to try to set up a garden sharing scheme for the village. In the scheme anyone who has a garden that is too big for them or they can no longer manage can be put in touch with someone who wants some space to grow some produce. Normally some of the produce that is grown is then shared between the grower and the land owner. I know some schemes do operate informally in the village and the Council decided it would see if it could help put some other people in touch with each other. If any one is interested, either as someone with some garden space to spare, or if you want space to grow vegetable and other produce, then please get in touch with the Parish Clerk.
