LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S INSTITUTES WILD FLOWER SURVEY

Throughout 2007/8 the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of Women's Institutes are organising and carrying out research into the survival of certain of Britain's wild flowers in both counties.

A presentation of the results and related crafts will be exhibited at Beaumanor Hall in autumn 2008.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £50,000 towards the project together with support from the Ken Chamberlain Trust and the Better Communities Awards. This money is providing a comprehensive programme of activities to provide members with skills and materials they need to help provide valuable data about the state of the local environment.

This is the fifth Federation Survey to be undertaken. Previous surveys have covered Field Names (1968), Churchyards and Burial Grounds (1981), and two Countryside Surveys (1978 and 1996). This current survey has been developed by the WI and is being provided support and advice from Leicestershire County Council,

In 2007 the hunt is on for 12 wild flowers, which are good habitat indicators, recording their distribution across the two counties.
