SECOND ALLEY SPINNEY

Bacon Hole Spinney

This spinney is covered by a Group Tree Preservation Order. It is privately owned and there is no public access.

A survey of this spinney was last carried out as part of a field by field survey of Rothley Parish in July-September 1988 by P.A.Evans.

It was described as a spinney of deciduous woodland and the following species were recorded:

Acer campestre (Field Maple)
Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn)
Fraxinus excelsior (Common Ash)
Quercus robur (Common Oak)
Prunus spinosa (Cherry)
Sambucus nigra (Elder)
Ulmus sp. (Elm)

I have not yet found a map giving this spinney a name or the date of planting. The farmer, Anthony Cooper of Southfield Farm, calls it Second Alley Spinney. It is shown on the 1885 map of the parish.

The trees are mainly Oak and Ash and very much in keeping with other spinneys in this area of Rothley.

On the 1st August 2007 two adult and two juvenile Buzzards were flying around the spinney and seen there two days later.
