A History of the Inns at Saltby

In 1820 there were two public houses in Saltby, the Nags Head and the Rutland Arms. The Rutland Arms was in the charge of the Burrows family, in 1820 and 1821 that meant Mary Burrows but from 1822, the landlord was Henry Burrows. After 1827, there is no record of the Rutland arms so it would seem that it closed sometime between 1827 and 1846 when White’s Trade Directory was published. The Nag’s Head can also be traced back to 1820 when the landlord was Amos Jackson. From 1827, for over forty years, the Nag’s Head was run by the Mount family, compared with whom, succeeding landlords stayed for a comparatively short time. The Nag’s Head is still in business and a list of landlords can be found under Family History.
