Everyone has a role to play in the Big Switch Off Campaign

Take part in competitions to win some exciting prizes!
The Big Switch Off is a partnership of local authorities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland promoting energy efficiency campaign running for a week from 12th – 18th October 2009. The innovative week-long campaign encourages everyone in three authority areas to switch off unnecessary electrical equipment and lighting to save energy, money and cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Over £1.8 billion worth of energy is wasted by leaving appliances on standby at work and home in the UK. The Big Switch Off campaign aims to address this and encourage local organisations and households to reduce their energy use and costs. The residents in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland could potentially save over £13million by switching off appliances on standby!
To do their bit residents, schools, colleges and universities, community and faith groups are invited to get involved in various competitions. To make a difference at your home, school or work, the Big Switch Off partnership will provide free resources from the website. During the Big Switch Off week, we will release daily energy saving tips on different themes. "GO LEARN" in Hinckley & Bosworth District

Leicestershire Adult Learning Service will be promoting the autumn range of adult courses across the county over the summer months.
Details of local and county classes are available in the "GO LEARN" brochures which will be delivered to most homes wherever possible.
The service is aware that a mailing service may not always be possible in every area but additional copies are made available in libraries, schools and community buildings.

If you love to read but find it difficult to get to your library because you are elderly or disabled, or because you are caring for someone at home, the Home Library Service is for you.
The service, provided by the Leicestershire Library Service, is absolutely free and provides access to a huge range of books, including books in large print and talking books. Music CDs are also available and a DVD subscription service for a small charge.
Signing up for the service couldn’t be easier. We will visit you to discuss your choice of books or music, and a volunteer will then visit regularly to deliver the items to your home. Alternatively, arrangements can be made so that a friend or relative can collect books and other items on your behalf. More »

Motorbikes donated to Leicester charity
Sgt Julie Strong, Jo Adams, PCSO Sarah Eastwood, PCSO Maggie Hill, Jonathan Rogers & Chris Barratt with some of the donated bikes
Police in Leicester are helping a local charity to get back on track after it was targeted by thieves.
Neighbourhood officers from Hinckley Road police station have organised the donation of 20 mini motos and motorbikes to Nacro, the crime reduction charity, to help it continue its work tackling anti-social behaviour and engaging with young people.

Recent research shows that in the UK Neighbourhood Watch schemes were effective in reducing crime in 79% of cases when compared with similar areas where no schemes existed.
With encouraging results on the effectiveness of NHW in reducing crime, this paper now proposes that future research should focus on other aspects of NHW that the public value.

PHOTOGRAPHERS INVITED TO FOCUS ON LEICESTERSHIRE
With only one month remaining for amateur photographers to enter the Spring round of the Leicestershire Through a Lens competition, organisers are encouraging keen snappers to take up their cameras.
With the winners of the first and second round of the ‘Leicestershire Through a Lens’ competition revealed, there are just six remaining spaces in the special 2010 calendar to be filled by the area’s photographers.
The competition, launched by Bardon Aggregates, invites photographers of all ages to get creative and capture the very essence of life in Leicestershire on camera. Over four hundred entries were received from across the region for the Autumn and Winter rounds and now people are invited to get snapping and enter the Spring round of the competition. More »
Simon Taylor, Bardon Aggregates’ regional director said: “We received some really outstanding entries in the first two rounds, and I’m sure that the standard is only going to get higher as the competition progresses.
“The Spring season provides us with some of the most extraordinary scenes with weather extremes providing a varied backdrop.”
Budding photographers are welcome to enter as many of their images as they wish for a chance to win £200 worth of Jessops vouchers and to see their work included in the special 2010 calendar which will be distributed to schools to aid their fundraising. The deadline for entries is 30th June.
The judging panel, which is made up of Deputy Councillor Mr Roger Blackmore, Baroness Jennifer Gretton, the Mercury’s very own picture editor Jason Senior, and Bardon Aggregates’ Simon Taylor, will shortlist a number of entries from across the age categories, and the winners will be revealed at a presentation evening early in July.
The three age categories for entrants are; 11 years and under, 12-18 years and 19 years and over.

Swine Flu

Leicestershire Constabulary is working together with local agencies to monitor the situation regarding swine flu. We are working closely with partner organisations within the Local Resilience Forum (LRF), particularly the NHS and Health Protection Agency, to ensure we are ready to respond to any further developments.
We have thorough and well-practiced plans in place so we will be able to respond if and when circumstances change. In the meantime, however it is business as usual.

Village SOS is an exciting new initiative from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and the BBC. It is searching for six UK villages with a great business idea and six enterprising individuals to act as Village Champions and help them achieve their ambitions.
Together they will create a brand new venture that will bring new life and energy to the village with funding of between £100,000 and £400,000 from BIG.
The journey of the six successful villages and their Village Champions will be filmed for a major prime time BBC One series in winter 2010. More »

Be inspired by the natural world and capture a landscape or wildlife image for a prize winning photography competition.
Leicestershire County Council’s Historic and Natural Environment Team is inviting entries on the themes of wildlife and landscapes in Leicestershire and Rutland. Photos could be a regular visitor to your garden or local park or, a picture of your favourite scene at dawn or dusk.
There are 4 age categories with prizes for the 1st and 2nd winners of each category. Under 11s, 11-14 years and 15-19s can win £50 and £25 HMV vouchers while those aged 20 and over can win £50 and £25 of Jessop’s vouchers. Entries can be sent by email, post or dropped off at local libraries. More »
The competition is one of the events in the Discover like Darwin programme – activities to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the Find your Talent cultural and creative programme for young people.
Photographs will be displayed on the County Council web site and in local publications and displays.

Do you have a problem with heavy lorries using the roads in your village?
The majority of unclassified roads in Leicestershire have a maximum 7.5 Tonne weight restriction and lorries above this weight are prohibited from using these roads – unless they are delivering to a site within the weight restricted area.
Leicestershire Police Roads Policing Unit is tackling this problem.

Go on a fantastical adventure and become a Quest Seeker at your local library this summer.
Quest Seekers is a fun and exciting reading challenge for children aged 4 – 12 years and will be taking place in all libraries in Leicestershire, including mobile libraries.
Children can start on the adventure by picking up a free Quest Seekers membership card and fold-out poster in their local library from 4th July. Young Quest Seekers will be challenged to find a golden book and there are three stages to their quest. To complete the challenge children will read books and collect stickers throughout the summer and be rewarded with a certificate. More »

Viewers of Channel 4’s hit show The Secret Millionaire will now be able to play a part in helping local community groups secure much-needed funding through the Big Lottery Fund’s new Secret Millionaire Fund.
Big Lottery Fund and The Secret Millionaire have teamed up to give viewers of the programme a chance to act on the charitable inspiration fuelled by the show. Lottery funding worth £1 million has been lined up to give away in grants across the UK of up to £10,000 from the Fund. More »
People can visit www.channel4.com/secretmillionaire to find out if their community group is eligible to apply, or they can even nominate a local good cause who could benefit from the funding. Groups can then download a straightforward application form and apply to BIG’s Secret Millionaire Fund.
Successful applicants may then be selected for filming by Channel 4 and appear on the website or TV programme. Visitors to the website can also showcase their favourite local cause on an interactive map of the UK and get involved by donating time or money.
The Secret Millionaire Fund will support projects that give people better chances in life, build stronger communities, improve rural and urban environments or promote healthier and more active people and communities. « Less
