December 2008 and January 2009 Parish News Line
“Grace, peace and joy be yours this Christmas and in the New Year”
I write to you as the season of Advent is about to begin. Advent means ‘Coming’ and is the period of time including the four Sundays leading up to Christmas itself. In the Church we will be lighting candles each week on our Advent Ring. Besides serving to remind us that time is running out for our preparations for Christmas, lighting a candle each week reminds us of what leads up to the birth of Jesus over 2000 years ago.
The first candle reminds us of the Patriarchs. Those men of God in the Old Testament such as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The second candle reminds us of the prophets such as Isaiah, and Jeremiah, who told of the coming of a Messiah (a Saviour). The third candle reminds us of John the Baptist who went ahead of Jesus to announce his arrival. The fourth candle reminds us of Mary, the mother of Jesus who, though only a young woman, put her trust in God. That leaves one remaining candle which will be lit at Christmas to remind us of the birth of Jesus. The light coming into the world.
At this time when we live with so much uncertainty in our world it can be very helpful and comforting to continue such well-known traditions as the lighting of candles during Advent. Switching on the news or reading our newspapers does nothing to lift our spirits at the present time and I am sure that many of you will have anxieties about the future, perhaps financial or employment worries and so on. Some of you may be finding it hard to get into the ‘Christmas mood’ (whatever that means for you).
In times of uncertainty it is good to have some things which remain constant. Each year on the 25th December we keep the festival of Christmas. We remember again the birth of a baby in Bethlehem, not just any baby but the Son of God being born as a human being. The light coming into the world. In John’s Gospel we read, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.”
That’s the sort of constant I need in my life. The knowledge that this tiny baby went on to become a man and to die on a Cross for my sins.
That’s what we really celebrate each year at Christmas. So, amid all the hustle and bustle of your Christmas preparations, remember:
“Jesus is the reason for the season”
Please join us as we celebrate the light coming into the world.
A joyous Christmas to you all

In October on Didcott Way a large willow tree was felled illegally! This tree was growing on a public area maintained by the Parish Council. As we are all aware, trees play a huge part in reducing pollution and make the village a green and pleasant place to live. Therefore, the Parish Council intends to purchase and replant a tree, adding to the already substantial costs of vandalism!
Since April 2008 the Parish Council has spent £1,568 repairing and replacing vandalised village property, including the bus shelter and aspects of the Recreation Ground. The repair costs are taken from the precept which all villagers contribute to in their council tax payments! Please report any vandalism to the Police, you can telephone Crimestoppers anonymously without charge on 0800 555 111.
The next meetings of the Parish Council will be held on:
Thursday 4th December 2008 and Thursday 5th February 2009 at 7.30pm in the Sir John Moore Heritage Centre. All members of the public are encouraged to attend the meetings and will be made most welcome.

News from Sir John Moore Primary School, Appleby Magna
This term has been a really busy one with a record number of 140 children on roll. In September we took 41 Year 5 and 6 children on an outdoor pursuits residential trip to Wales. We had a beautiful week with canoeing, caving, kayaking, abseiling and climbing and the children had lots of fun. We have been involved in lots of charitable events this term with the distribution of 146 harvest baskets to residents of the village, the collection of 40 shoeboxes for Eastern Europe, £222 for the Macmillan Coffee Morning, £150 for the Breast Cancer Pink Day, and £50 for Ashby Youth for Christ. We are very grateful for the generous support from our parents.
The children are enjoying our new tables and benches which we bought during the summer. We are working hard to move our Ofsted category from good to outstanding with our "aim for excellence" initiative working hard with our children on writing and maths. Three of our gifted and talented children were fortunate enough to go on a county-wide residential trip to Wales. Here are some of their comments about the trip: "the gorge walking was great", "rock scrambling on the suicide wall was scary when we all fell into the sea" (it wasn't very deep!) "having a good time with everyone was very enjoyable" – Charles Pickering, Martha James, Edward Adams (Year 6 pupils)

GENERAL INFORMATION
Village Meeting about the Proposed Open Cast at Minorca Colliery
David, the Landlord at The Belper Arms kindly made the Dining Room available for the meeting at 8.00 pm, on Monday 3 November.
The Chairman of the Parish Council, introduced James Dodds, geologist and resident of Newton Burgoland who organised the meeting and was its first speaker. Other speakers were John Crane, solicitor, Steve Leary, the organiser of the Measham Mine Protest Group, Joanna Crane and Andrew Bridgen, Conservative Party Parliamentary Candidate who announced his support of any future campaign.
Some 65 people attended and 46 people left completed questionnaires.Of the respondents 80% were strongly opposed and about 11% were opposed.
It now needs to be decided what to do. One idea that came up was to start a “technical support group” in the village which can help collate and disseminate technical information to the Parish Council and the Measham Group (via Joanna). The technical group can call on people in the village and their extended networks to get data and review information submitted by UK Coal; précis this information and where appropriate compile reports.Willing volunteers would be needed to read through documents; potentially type etc. This could then form the basis of objections from the Parish Council at the appropriate time.
James Dodds would be willing to chair such a group (but not run it on his own!)
Please send any comments to: JamesDodds@jdih.co.uk
