Triumph for Ellistown Parish Plan Launch
Triumph for Ellistown Parish Plan Launch

The storm clouds cleared and the sun shone on a lovely occasion on Monday 6th July, when residents, Parish Plan Group members and service providers came together to celebrate the launch of their Parish Plan and Action Plan Report at the Community Centre. It was a lovely occasion and some residents volunteered in different ways to help the community further and groups including the Allotment Society, the Marlene Reid Centre, leicestershirevillages.com, the National Forest and the Rural Community Council displayed information and ways to help.
Ellistown has the honour of two firsts. Emily Watson, the Chairman of the Parish Plan Chairman has become the youngest ever Chairman of a Parish Plan Group in Leicestershire and Rutland, at the age of 22. Not only that, she has gone on to become the Chairman of the Parish Council, again the youngest ever in Leicestershire. The Parish Plan Group was congratulated on their energy, enthusiasm, organisation and team spirit in the way they work and have put in hundreds of hours on the project.
Already, a Community Speedwatch scheme, a new Summer Gala and an Incinerator Action Group have come from volunteers who responded to the Parish Plan questionnaire in July 2005. The key concerns of the Plan are the speed of traffic and HGVs coming through the village, the desire for a community hall, improved communication and the need for a good recreation area and sports facilities, and activities for young people and also for more allotments and environmental improvements. County, District and Police representatives and the Chief Executive of the National Forest responded on ways in which they could help the community.
The Parish Council and the Parish Plan Group are looking forward to helping to take forward the actions from the Action Plan, a process which could take some years, but will be very worthwhile for all members of the community.

Classrooms full of energy
Classrooms full of energy

This exciting new project is currently being piloted by 18 schools in Leicestershire with students learning about renewable energy and climate change by using three miniature kits.

The kits generate renewable energy from a wind turbine and photo voltaic cell to run a fan, power a light, or blow a buzzer. The solar water heater shows water temperature rising as its left in the sun.

The kit comes with a presentation and set of lesson plans for KS2 and KS3 providing links with the national curriculum. The scheme is lead by ENABLE (Environmental Action for a Better Leicestershire) aiming to embed sustainability at early age of learning and make education fun and interactive. More »

There are 20 sets of kits which can be lent to schools and community groups on first come first serve basis. You can register your interest to borrow a set of Renewable Energy Kits for the autumn term at www.leics.gov.uk/energykits

Leicestershire Constabulary is appealing for people to be aware of their surroundings when using cash machines or automated teller machines (ATM).

By taking sensible precautions, you can reduce the risk of losing your hard-earned cash. Most people already take these precautions everyday, often without realising it.

So, how can you avoid being duped?
